When your vehicle needs maintenance, your first instinct may be to look for the cheapest mechanic around. This is especially true if you're on a very strict budget and can't afford to spend a lot of money on car repairs. However, picking the cheapest mechanic or buying the cheapest parts to use may not always be the best thing to do. While there might not always be a reason to buy the most expensive items or go to the most expensive mechanic, don't always go with the cheapest. Quality Service Sometimes Costs - But There's Value Quality service isn't always inexpensive. The mechanics who cost more often have reasons why their services are more than others. Some have better equipment. Others have been in service longer and so have more training and experience. They may have a larger staff so they can work on more cars at once, or they might have completed a number of certifications, like all of our auto technicians here at Elite who are ASE Certified. Your windshield wipers take a beating from the elements, yet you rely on them to help improve your visibility during dangerous conditions, and also to remove dirt and debris that may distract you from paying attention to the road ahead. If properly maintained, they'll help make sure you arrive at your destination and back in one piece. If you fail to pay them any attention, however, not only do they leave a mess behind, but they may also pose a safety hazard. Fortunately, there are quite a few things you can do to help maintain and care for your windshield wipers. Make Sure They Stay Clean This seems counterproductive, but it can be done. To maintain your windshield wiper blades, make sure your windshield stays clean. Consider making it a habit to clean your windshield every time you fill up at the pump. Most gas stations provide a windshield cleaning solution and squeegee conveniently next to the gas pumps, yet hardly anyone ever pays attention. The dirt and debris on your wi ... read more

You hear a lot about protecting your car's exterior--its paint job, its tires, and its chrome finish. But what about protecting the interior of your car? There are several different things you can do to protect your car and its interior from sunlight, heat, and other issues. The last thing you want is your car's interior being damaged and decreasing the entire value of your vehicle. Protecting Your Dashboard The bright sunlight that streams in through your windshield can damage the material of your dashboard. It can cause it to fade and, if the dashboard is under hot sunlight for too long, it can actually start to crack or warp. To protect your dashboard, there are a few things you can do. You can put up a sunlight blocking cardboard insert each time you park in the sun. These sun blockers will not only keep the sun off your dashboard but they will also keep your car from heating up. Another option is to buy a dashboard cover made from cloth. It atta ... read more

Let's talk windshield wiper blades. Now, that may seem like a pretty mundane topic, but think about how important your vision is. We work hard to protect our eyes. If we need contacts or glasses, we take care of them too. Well, wiper blades are critical to our vision when we drive. We all really ought to think about wipers as part of an important safety system. We should think about maintaining safety, not just responding when our wiper blades fail. How many times have you been caught off guard by the first storm of the season, with a streaky windshield you can barely see out of? Or no washer fluid? Remember, your wiper blades live outside the vehicle, exposed to sun and heat in the summer and cold and ice in the winter. It's no wonder that they get dry, brittle and torn. We recommend changing wiper blades twice a year, before they're so damaged that they don't work. If you replace them with one of your spring and fall oil changes, you should always have wiper blades that ca ... read more

If you've just turned 16 and gotten your first car, or if you've left a large city and had to buy a car because you no longer have access to public transportation, you may not know exactly what to expect. It's one thing to know how to drive a car, but it's quite another to know all of the things that come with owning a car. Here are five things that all car owners need to know in order to handle emergencies or keep their cars running longer. Know How to Change a Tire This one is pretty basic, but many people simply don't know how to change a tire. Blowouts or punctures due to over- or under-inflated tires happen all the time, sometimes far from the nearest gas station or towing company. Changing a tire is fairly simple if you know how to use a jack. Find a smooth, well-lit area. Set your parking brake, and then jack up the car. You'll need to have a lug wrench on hand to remove the nuts from the tire. Remove the tire, place the spare on the axle ... read more
