A History Of The Cadillac Motor Car Division of General Motors

General Motors was formed from the remnants of the Henry Ford Company. After a dispute between Henry Ford and his investors, Ford left the company along with several of his key partners in March 1902. Ford's financial backer William Murphy and Lemuel Bowen, called in engineer Henry M. Leland of Leland & Faulconer Manufacturing Company to appraise the plant and equipment in preparation for a liquidation of the company's assets. Instead of offering an appraisal, Leland persuaded Murphy and Bowen to continue manufacturing automobiles using Leland's proven single-cylinder engine. A new company called the Cadillac Automobile Company was established on 22 August 1902. The company was named after French explorer Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac, who founded Detroit in 1701. General Motors purchased the company in 1909. Cadillac had laid the foundation for the modern mass production of automobiles by demonstrating the complete interchangeability of its precision pa ... read more

Ford and Heinz: Car Parts Made Of...Tomatoes?

Ford and Heinz: Car Parts Made Of...Tomatoes?

Yes, you heard that right...the two companies are looking into using tomato fibers for making automobile parts! They're testing the durability of this idea in relation to car wiring brackets and storage containers. Something like this is obviously very bio-friendly, as it employs tomato skins. "We're exploring whether this food processing byproduct makes sense for an automotive application," said Ellen Lee, plastics research technical specialist for Ford. "Our goal is to develop a strong, lightweight material that meets our vehicle requirements, while at the same time reducing our overall environmental impact." "We are delighted that the technology has been validated," said Vidhu Nagpal, a Heinz packaging director. "Although we are in the very early stages, and many questions remain, we are excited about the possibilities this could produce and the advancement of sustainable 100% plant-based plastics." This is the first time the auto industry and plants have crossed paths ... read more

The Electric Cars Of 2015 - 2015 Ford Focus

Today's video review covers the pros and cons of the 2015 Ford Focus. This is an excellent review created and offered by the automotive devision over at CNET. Here's a quick overview before we get to the video... PROS The Ford Focus Electric delivers on its estimated range. The torquey, electric acceleration makes the compact hatchback feel responsive. The base model is about as fully-loaded as the Focus gets. CONS The 76-mile range is less than that of the newer competition from Fiat and Kia. The battery protrudes into the rear storage space. None of the standard Focus' driver-aid features are available on the Electric. CONCLUSIONS Three years after its predecessor debuted, the 2015 Ford Focus Electric is still a good choice for a compact battery-powered car, but the newer competition offers slightly greater range and faster charging.
