2016 GMC Canyon Diesel Test Drive

2016 GMC Canyon Diesel Test Drive

The GMC Canyon is a little truck, but now it can act like a big one. The 2016 Canyon and its twin, the Chevrolet Colorado, are the only small pickups in the United States that you can get with a diesel engine, and the first since the 1980s. The timing could be better. Gas is dirt cheap, so efficiency is on the back burner for many truck shoppers. Meanwhile, diesel is still a dirty word, thanks to the Volkswagen emissions cheating scandal. GM hasnt been implicated in that, but its put a fog over the fuel, which was riding high this time last year. Related Image But in fact, as far as the EPA is concerned, the Canyon and Colorado are A-OK. The agency tweaked its testing after VWs issues came to light, making it more rigorous, and the Canyon and Colorado were the first vehicles to be certified under the new procedures. So breathe easy, compression ignition fans, this ones good to go. Since the engine is really the only thing different about this Canyon, I wont be getting into the rest o ... read more

How Fuel Management Systems Work

Chances are your contact with your car's fuel is limited to filling it up at the gas station. But, once you put in that fuel it has quite a journey and a few important responsibilities. Your car's fuel management system must: Allow the engine to start and run in the coldest and hottest places; Allow the engine to run smoothly under all conditions; And keep exhaust emissions in check. The vehicle's fuel management system uses a multitude of sensors to gather information such as temperature, pressure, air flow, and other parameters. This information is processed by engine control module. The engine control module can then operate the fuel injectors and various other actuators that control the engine operation. Key components of the fuel management system include: - Fuel Pump - Fuel Filter - Fuel Pressure Regulator - Fuel Injectors - Airflow Sensor - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor - Oxygen Sensors - Throttle Body - Engine Control Module The fuel ma ... read more

Auto Repair Tempe: The Lowly Spark Plug?

Auto Repair Tempe: The Lowly Spark Plug?

It seems like the days when you changed your spark plugs every couple of years have ended. Why is that? Well, they really did wear out that often. A couple of things are different now. First, spark plugs are made of better materials that last longer, and they're designed better. The second reason that spark plugs used to have to be changed was that they were fouled up with carbon deposits. The deposits built up when fuel wasn't burned completely. That doesn't happen as much now with modern engine controls. Engine control computers precisely time when fuel is injected into the engine and when spark plugs fire. Unless something is wrong, spark plugs just don't foul like they used to. Let's take a little tour of the steps in this process. Electricity from the battery goes into a coil that allows power to build up to anywhere from 12,000 to 45,000 volts, depending on the vehicle. The engine management computer tells the coil (some engines have more than one) when to release the po ... read more

Cleaning The Engine Bay - Demystified

Cleaning The Engine Bay - Demystified

No doubt there's been a few times you've looked under the hood of your car to discover all the road grime and collected grease. While it's easier to close the hood and pretend you never saw the mess to begin with, others may want to make the engine bay as clean as possible, whether it's for personal reasons or they want to make it more appealing to potential buyers. So what do you do? The engine bay is a complicated mess of engineering and electrical components that would have most consumers running away with their tails tucked between their legs. But cleaning the engine bay doesn't have to be complicated or even scary. In fact, you don't even need that much time or tools to begin this seemingly scary project. Let's get started! Supplies You'll Need: A degreaser. Doesn't have to be a specialized engine degreaser. A Tesla All-Electric Car At An Affordable Price Point

A Tesla All-Electric Car At An Affordable Price Point

Tesla has sure made some impressive strides in all-electric vehicles, with sleek styling and 200+ mile ranges between charges. But, this cutting edge tech comes at a fairly high price. That may not be the case in the near future. It seems Tesla is developing a new, smaller electric vehicle to add to it's lineup starting in 2017. It will be called the Model 3. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has hinted that this new vehicle would retail for approximately $35,000 US. There hasn't been much released about the performance of this model other than it would have a range of 200+ miles between charges, similar to the current Model S. No official images of the new car's design are available as of yet, but I think it's safe to say we'll see more of the sporty Tesla style

Fixing A Cracked Dashboard - What Are The Options?

Cracked dashboards are nothing new here in the hot Valley sun. We've all seen (or experienced) either a single crack or something that looks like an aerial map of the Grand Canyon. What can be done? There are basically four options. 1) Have it repaired in place. There's usually some kind of colored filler applied and shaped to cover the cracks. The price varies on this, and so does the quality of the results. I've seen pretty good, and pretty bad. If you can locate someone who's good and priced right, you might give it try. 2) Replace the whole dash with a new one. The results are stunning, and so is the price. This is probably the most labor intensive and expensive solution. 3) Install a cloth dash cover/mat. This can be effective, and even attractive when done well. The price is often acceptable and with a couple of hours to install it, this is also worth considering. 4) Install a new dash skin. This can give you similar results to replacing the dash with a new one, with only a ... read more
