Auto Repair Chandler: Car Sales Are On The Rise!

Auto Repair Chandler: Car Sales Are On The Rise!

When the U.S. economy saw large declines in housing prices and a large increase in unemployment rates and gas prices, unsurprisingly the number of cars sales took a drastic hit, as well. The downturn was the worst seen in the auto industry since the times of the Great Depression. Car sales didn't recover for over six years. Not a single month during that time rose above the amount sold in December 2007. As of March of this year, however, that streak has finally been broken. March saw sales that annualized to 15.6 million, well above the predictions for the year. So, what drove the increase in sales? Experts believe that several factors, simultaneously contributing, have managed this long awaited feat. One factor may be the availability of new and well-reviewed products. Another is the pent-up demand that has come about as a result of the financial strain of the last few years. The tough economy has forced many lenders to lower interest ra ... read more

And Audi's 2014 R18 race car, which will compete at the 24 Hours of LeMans, will use six laser diodes in addition to its banks of LED lights. How do you turn a laser beam into something resembling a headlight? In the video below Audi's Head of Lighting Innovations, at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit provides an explanation. Camaro Z/28 So Fast It Outruns Its Own Tires!

Camaro Z/28 So Fast It Outruns Its Own Tires!

It's a fact that the Chevy Camaro Z/28 has the widest front tires of any production car. At 305 mm wide, those tires produce tremendous grip--especially since they're Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS. In fact, they make so much grip, the Z/28 was spinning the tire around the wheel under braking--the Z/28 was, in effect, outrunning its tires, or at least their ability to grip the wheels. It's an unusual problem for a production car, but it's a good one to have--too much grip is just enough. Camaro Z/28 engineers had to come up with a creative solution to prevent tires from slipping on the rim during hard braking and acceleration on the track. Part of the cause also comes down to the Brembo carbon ceramic brakes, which provide tremendous stopping power for the large but track-worthy Z/28. But regardless of the cause, Chevy had to find a fix for the tire-on-wheel slippage issue. If Chevy hadn't found a solution to the problem, it could have resulted in the whee ... read more

Touch Screen Steering Wheel Keeps Eyes On The Road

Touch Screen Steering Wheel Keeps Eyes On The Road

Today's update comes to us via NBC's Auto News department. Distance driving can be mind-numbingly boring, but looking away from the road to text or change songs can be a life-or-death gamble. Plus, buttons embedded in the wheel only control a fraction of a car's functionality. Now German researchers have a steering wheel prototype that puts everything within reach — no glancing needed. "If you have gestures on the steering wheel, you spend more time looking at the street," said Albrecht Schmidt, a computer science professor specializing in human-computer interaction at the University of Stuttgart in Germany, who worked on the prototype. The team came up with the idea for a multi-touch steering wheel interface while thinking about driving and mobile technology. Their prototype is made from clear acrylic ringed in infrared LEDs. An infrared camera attached to the bottom picks up the reflections made when the surface is touched. A driver can con ... read more
