My Car Won't Start. What Could be Wrong? What Do I Do?

Tempe Auto Repair My Car Wont Start It happens to everyone at some point: you're running late, it's a big day, and just when you think you're going to make it, you turn your key and...your car does nothing. There are a number of reasons why your car may not start. Some of them can be pretty quick, inexpensive fixes, but some may require the assistance of a professional mechanic. Here are some of the more common issues that can cause your car to not start. Check the Battery Cables If your car makes no noise at all when you try to start it, one of the battery cables may be the problem. Look to see if they're corroded. If you're comfortable using hand tools under the hood, you can take a screwdriver, push the point between the connector and the battery post, and twist it a little. If the engine then starts, the problem is the cable, and you'll need to replace as soon as possible. Is the Battery Dead? If your car makes a clicking noise, the problem may be the battery (and/or may be a bad cable as listed above). If it's the battery, often the only solution is to get a new one. However, if there's a problem with your charging system, the battery may be dead because it has not been receiving the proper recharging. More on this in a moment. The Engine Cranks But Doesn't Start First, the simplest check. Are you out of gas? It happens all the time. You wouldn’t be the first person this has happened to. It's also possible your gas gauge is malfunctioning. The problem here may also be the ignition system, or something with the fuel injection system. You may not be able to tell if these systems are functioning properly or not. This is best left to one of our qualified, ASE Certified diagnostic mechanics. In a jam, you can check the spark plug wires where they connect to the spark plugs. Sometimes just jiggling them a bit is enough to get a better connection and get your car started so you can get home or get your car into our shop. Sometimes It's Not an Easy Fix If you've checked everything you can think of and your car still won't start, it may not be a simple fix. There may be a problem with your ignition system, or there may be an issue with your fuel pump. In some cases, the only real option is to call a tow truck and have your car brought into our shop for diagnostics. We'll do a thorough job of tracking down the problem and providing the most affordable options for repair. Give us a call today! Call us today:
